2012 New York Auto Show photo gallery

Acura RLX Concept

We've been expecting a replacement for the Acura RL to show up in the next year or so, and here's our first look: The RLX concept. Underneath the handsome (at last!) styling, the RLX packs a 3.5 liter V6 with optional SportHybrid SH-AWD system. Along with an electric-motor-boosted V6 driving the front wheels through a 7-speed twin-clutch transmission, the system uses a pair of electric motors at the back, one driving each rear wheel, that provide a torque-vectoring system. Total output is 370 horsepower, and I can't wait to try it! The RLX will also be available in a front-drive, non-hybrid version good for 310 hp.

2012 BMW M6 Convertible

2012 BMW M6 Convertible
As with the 6-series on which it is based, BMW will introduce the convertible version of the M6 first, with the coupe to follow shortly. Specs on this baby: 560 hp and 502 lb-ft from the 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8.

2013 BMW X1

 2013 BMW X1

BMW's smallest CUV has been on European roads for a while now, but the New York show marked the X1's official North American debut. US buyers will be able to choose between a 245 hp twin-turbo four and a 306 hp twin-turbo inline six.

2013 Buick Enclave

 2013 Buick Enclave

Buick showed the facelifted Enclave, which gets minor styling changes outside and an improved interior inside. New features include Internet-enabled apps for the infotainment system and an industry-first center airbag, which deploys between the front occupants to provide additional side-impact protection.

2013 Cadillac SRX

 2013 Cadillac SRX

What would the New York show be without an updated Cadillac? The SRX gets a refresh for 2013, with minor changes to exterior and interior styling. The big news is behind the dash, where the SRX gets Caddy's new CUE infotainment system.

2014 Chevrolet Impala

 2014 Chevrolet Impala

After being left to languish for years, the Impala has finally gotten a much-needed redesign. The new Impala features contemporary styling and a choice of direct-injected engines, including the venerable 3.6 liter V6, a new 2.5 liter 4-cylinder, and the 2.4 liter eAssist "mild hybrid" system found in other full-size GM cars. New technology includes an active noise cancellation system for four-cylinder models.

2013 Chevrolet Traverse

2013 Chevrolet Traverse
The punim on the 2013 Traverse is the new face of future Chevy crossovers, with a single grille replacing the old over-under split. Along with the new front fascia, the Traverse gets an updated interior, a suspension retuned for more car-like ride and handling, and a center airbag that protects the front occupant in an opposite-side impact.

2013 Dodge Challenger Rallye Redline

2013 Dodge Challenger Rallye Redline
The Challenger Rallye Redline combines the base model's 305 hp V6 and paddle-shift automatic tranmission with a stiffened suspension, quicker steering ratio, and, of course, a big red stripe.

Fisker Atlantic

Fisker Atlantic
This is the follow-on to the Fisker Karma, a smaller, more affordable, and more family-friendly. Like the Chevrolet Volt, this is a range-extended EV that can run on home-charged battery power and then use an on-board four-cylinder generator to extend its range when the battery runs out.

2013 Ford Explorer Sport

 2013 Ford Explorer Sport

In years past, the Sport was the two-door version of the Explorer. This new Explorer Sport really is sporty, thanks to a 350 hp twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6, stiffened suspension, and menacing design cues. EPA fuel economy estimates for the new muscle-bound Explorer are 16 MPG city and 22 MPG highway.

Honda Accord Crosstour Concept

Honda Accord Crosstour Concept
In keeping with their standard operating procedures, Honda previewed the facelifted Crosstour with a "concept" version; expect the production version to look a lot like this. The Crosstour gets updated styling to match the upcoming 2013 Accord and an improved V6 engine with cylinder deactivation and a 6-speed automatic transmission. New safety features include lane-departure and collision warning systems, along with LaneWatch, Honda's new blind-spot visibility system, which uses a camera mounted on the passenger side mirror.

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe
Hyundai's all-new Santa Fe is available in 5- and 7-passenger models, the former (shown here) called Santa Fe Sport and the latter with an extra 4 inches of wheelbase and 8.5 inches of length to accommodate its third-row seat. The Santa Fe Sport's 4-cylinder engine lineup is similar to the Sonata, either a direct-injected 2.4 liter tuned for 190 horsepower or a 264 hp 2-liter turbo. The long-wheelbase Santa Fe shares its 290 hp direct-injected Lambda II engine with the new Azera.

Infiniti LE concept

Infiniti LE concept
This concept car gives us a preview of the upcoming compact sedan from Infiniti -- but instead of a big honkin' gas engine, this one will be all electric. Under the skin, the LE Concept is basically a battery-powered Nissan Leaf, with a slightly more powerful electric motor.

2013 Lexus ES

2013 Lexus ES
With the new Camry on the road, the updated Lexus ES was bound to follow soon after, and here it is. Styling is subtle and familiar; the big news is that along with the V6-powered ES 350, Lexus will field a hybrid ES 300h, using the same 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine as the impressive Camry Hybrid.

2013 Lincoln MKZ

2013 Lincoln MKZ
Just like the old MKZ, Lincoln's all-new small(ish) sedan is based on the Ford Fusion, but this time it gets unique fastback(ish) styling and a new version of the butterfly grille. Engine choices will include a 240 horsepower 2-liter turbocharged EcoBoost four, a 300 hp 3.7 liter V6, and a 188 horsepower hybrid system with a two-liter engine.

2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK

2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK
Along with a freshened front grille, Mercedes' smallest sport-ute will get an optional diesel engine. The GLK250 BlueTEC gets a 2.1 liter four-cylinder turbodiesel, while the GLK350's gasoline V6 has been updated for more power and better fuel economy. New features include a giant panoramic sunroof, active noise cancellation, advanced active safety featues and driver-adjustable suspension and steering systems.

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG
The freshly-redesigned SL-Class has yet to hit showrooms, but that didn't stop Mercedes from revealing the AMG version, which packs a 6.0 liter twin-turbo V12 delivering an epic 621 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque.

2013 Nissan Altima

2013 Nissan Altima
Nissan showed its updated Altima, with tweaks to its 2.5 liter engine and continuously-variable automatic transmission that boost its EPA highway rating to 38 MPG. Also new is Nissan's Internet-enabled infotainment system, called Nissan Connected.

2013 Porsche Boxster

2013 Porsche Boxster
Shown for the first time in the US, the all-new Boxster is longer and lower than the version it replaces, but it's lost 77 lbs. Lighter and more aerodynamic. Features include a new torque-vectoring rear axle and updated flat-six engines, a new 2.7 liter 265 hp unit for the base Boxster and a mildly-improved 3.4 liters 315 hp engine for the Boxster S.

2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel

2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel
If the naysayers don't like the idea of a Porsche SUV, I wonder what they'll say about a Porsche diesel -- or, more to the point, a Porsche diesel SUV? We're about to find out, because Porsche is introducing the Cayenne with a 3.0 liter diesel V6 that makes 240 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 time is 7.2 seconds, and top speed is 135 MPH.

2013 RAM 1500

2013 RAM 1500
The 2013 half-ton RAM doesn't look a whole lot different on the outside, but inside it gets the new Pentastar 3.6 liter V6 with an auto start/stop system, air-ride suspension, and an 8-speed automatic for both V6 and V8 engines. Improvements to the powertrain, frame and body (including an aluminum hood) have lead to weight savings of almost 150 lbs. over the current 1500.

2013 SRT Viper

2013 SRT Viper
As promised, the Viper is back, this time under the Street Racing and Technology brand. I was expeting big changes for the Viper, but while it is indeed all new, the 2013 Viper is clearly a member of the family. The styling is familiar, as is the 8.4 liter V10 under the hood, now tuned for 640 hp and 600 lb-ft (and look, ma, no turbochargers!). But unlike the old Viper, the new one does come with the protection of electronic stability control, so the percentage of wrecks should be much lower than with the old car. The Viper even gets standard cruise control -- good God, what is this world coming to?

2013 Subaru Legacy

2013 Subaru Legacy
Subaru showed the freshened Legacy, which along with minor styling updates gets a new version of the 2.5 liter "boxer" four-cylinder engine that delivers more power and up to 32 MPG on the highway -- impressive for an all-wheel-drive car. Subaru is touting the new EyeSight system, which encompasses active cruise control, lane-departure warning, and collision detection and avoidance. The six-cylinder 3.6R model will return, but the sport-tuned 2.5 GT has been axed. The Outback wagon gets similar updates.

2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek

2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek
The XV Crosstrek is the replacement for the Outback Sport, the Outback-ized version of the Impreza. Compared to the Outback, the XV gets a stiffened body structure and nearly nine inches of ground clearance for true off-road ability. The XV Crosstrek goes on sale this fall.

2013 Toyota Avalon

2013 Toyota Avalon
Toyota showed the new version of its big Avalon sedan, and it's clear that they are attempting to put an end to the car's geriatric reputation. The new Avalon features modern styling inside and out, and the car will even have a driver-selectable Sport model. No official word on the engine, but it's expected that the 3.5 liter V6 will carry over.

2013 Toyota Venza

2013 Toyota Venza
Show-goers will have to look closely to spot the changes to the 2013 Venza, but buyers will enjoy more standard equipment in all trim levels.

Volkswagen Passat Alltrack

Volkswagen Passat Alltrack
The Alltrack is an Outback-ized version of the European Passat (slightly different than our North American Passat, with all-wheel-drive, a raised suspension, and extra body cladding. The Alltrack was designed for Europe, but VW brought it to New York to get a feel for how Americans would react to such a vehicle. Given the success of the Outback and Volvo V70, it would certainly make sense for our market.
